Emma ready for challenge of real world
UNIVERSITY of Southern Queensland journalism student Emma Rae has only just submitted her final assessment, but has already proved she has what it takes to succeed in the real world of media.
Throughout the last year of her degree Miss Rae completed three internships in radio and television news organisations as part of her study at USQ.
“Having the real-world experience from the different news outlets was incredible, and I was grateful to pick up unique tips and tricks from each placement,” Miss Rae said.
“Each and every day of my internships was different, with new challenges and opportunities.
“I had a fantastic experience, which included writing stories that were broadcasted, conducting interviews and reading a live news headline.”
Miss Rae will graduate in April with a double degree in Arts (Journalism) and Business (Management and Leadership) and while the ink is still drying on her final assignment she’s excited about the next step in her career when she graduates.
“I’ve had four years of lectures and late night assignments so now I’m excited to put the skills and knowledge I’ve learnt into practice,” she said.
“USQ was a great fit for me because I received a major scholarship, had flexible course options and it was close to home.”
The practical element of the journalism degree also reiterated that she chose the right field of study.
“I chose to study journalism because I could share interesting and important stories, while having the opportunity to explore the world and meet fascinating people,” she said.
USQ’s journalism degree is renowned for its practical focus with students learning to report, write, edit, design and produce content for a range of media, including digital, television, magazine, radio and newspapers.
Students also gain industry experience through USQ’s online radio station Phoenix Radio broadcasts.
