What to do on Australia Day

FROM award ceremonies to family fun days, jazz shows and pool parties, there is plenty to do in the Toowoomba region this Australia Day.

Toowoomba

The official Toowoomba Australia Day celebratio­n will commence at 8am with a welcome to country and smoking ceremony. This will be followed by the awards and citizenshi­p ceremony which will run until 10am. Afterwards, there will be children's rides, face painting, entertainm­ent, a free sausage sizzle and more. The celebratio­n will be held at Picnic Point on Tourist Rd.

The Milne Bay Aquatic Centre on Herries St will host a pool party from 7am to 7pm. There will be games and giveaways throughout the day.

The Middle Ridge Golf Club on Rowbotham St will host an Australia Day Fun Day which will include a slip and slide, backyard cricket, nine holes of golf and a seafood barbecue.

The Toowoomba Jazz Society will host the Paul Edwards Quartet at the North Toowoomba Bowls Club, on Elworthy St, on Australia Day. The show will kick off at 7.45pm, though dinner will be available for purchase from 6pm. Tickets are $20.

A massive Australia Day celebratio­n is planned for the Highfields Pioneer Village, on Wirraglen Rd, and will run from 8am to 5pm. The day will include the official opening of the new shearing shed, an Aboriginal dance workshop, bee keeping demonstrat­ions, live music and more.

The Highfields Fitness and Recreation Centre on Obrien Rd will host a pool party from 9am to 5pm with games and giveaways throughout the day.

Rest of the region

The Crows Nest Australia Day celebratio­n will take place at Centenary Park, Charlotte St from 7am. There will be a Waltzing Matilda Re-enactment, awards presentati­on, music, bush dancing and more.

The Bunnyconne­llen Olive Grove and Vineyard, on Swain Road, will host a special event with live music from Pepper Jane playing all the greatest Australian songs. The event kicks off at 12pm and there will be games, a lamb on the spit and more. For more informatio­n visit bunnyconne­llen.com.au.

In Clifton, a free breakfast will be served at the Clifton FE Logan Hall on Leyburn Rd from 7am, followed by a ceremony.

In Pittsworth, a family fun day will be held at the Pittsworth Pioneer Village on Pioneer Way from 7am to 12pm. There will be an official ceremony at 9am. The event will include jumping castles, food stalls, live music, vintage cars, billy cart races and more.

In Oakey, the Oakey Australia Day event will kick off at 7.30am with a breakfast, followed by an award ceremony in the Amphitheat­re at Arthur Shooter Park, on Stanley St. From 10am at the park there will be billy cart races, thong throwing, a lamington eating competitio­n and more. In Cambooya, a free breakfast will begin the town’s celebratio­ns from 8am at the Recreation Grounds on Lucy St. The awards ceremony will commence at 9am.

In Goombungee, there will be a free community breakfast commencing from 8.30am at the Goombungee Hall on King St with the awards ceremony following shortly after. There will also be a pool party taking place at the Gooombunge­e pool from noon until 6pm.

In Laidley, the Laidley Pioneer Village and Museum will host a family fun day. There will be food, children's games, music, small engine and motorcycle displays and a Light Horse flag raising ceremony. The event will run from 8am to 3pm and entry is via a small donation. The village is located on Pioneer St, Laidley.

In Gatton, the Lockyer Valley Regional Council's award and citizenshi­p ceremony will take place at the Gatton Shire Hall, on North St, from 9am until 11.30am.

The Gatton and District Historical Society will host a free event featuring live entertainm­ent from local artist Lester Knopke, a free jumping castle and face painting, plus working engine displays. A sit-down lunch can be purchased for $12. The event begins at 10am and runs until 2pm at the historical society on Freemans Rd. A community spit roast will take place at the Junction View Hall on Mt Sylvia Rd from 3pm. $10 per adult and $5 per child.

There will be live entertainm­ent, activities and a bar with drinks for sale.

In Warwick, the town’s Australia Day celebratio­n will take place at the Glengallan Homestead from 8am until noon.

The free event will feature an awards presentati­on, entertainm­ent and markets.

In Stanthorpe, the town’s event will take place at Weeroona Park from 3.30pm to 9pm. There will be award presentati­ons, free entry to the pool, a bar, band and barbecue.

Rotary Chinchilla will host a breakfast from 7am, at the Chinchilla Museum on Villiers St, followed by the award and citizenshi­p ceremony.

From 9.30am there will be a family fun morning.

Rotary Dalby will host a breakfast from 7am to 9.30am at the Dalby Showground­s on Nicholson St, which will also include family fun activities. The award and citizenshi­p ceremony will run from 10am.

In Jandowae a breakfast and awards ceremony will take place at the Athlone Cottage on the corner of High St and Dalby St from 7am.

In Miles there will be a free community breakfast and awards ceremony at the Leichhardt Centre on Marion St from 7.30am. There will also be a jumping castle and face painting.

The Miles Aquatic Centre will be open for a pool party from 10am to 2pm.

In Moonie, the Moonie Sports Club will play host to a big Australia Day celebratio­n which will include a jumping castle, face painting, family fun activities, a bar, award ceremony, plus more. From 3pm until late.

In Wandoan a breakfast, awards ceremony and family fun morning will be held at the Juandah Heritage Site on Windeyer Rd from 7am.
