THE State Government has been called on weed out dodgy funeral operators across Queensland.

Shadow Attorney-General David Janetzki said there was “plenty to be gained from further investigation” into the industry after meeting with the Queensland Funeral Directors Association in Toowoomba at the weekend.

“We can’t have a situation where a couple of dodgy operators are ripping off grieving Queenslanders who are at their most vulnerable.

“There are a couple of dodgy operators and they’re the ones that need to be stamped out, because it goes to the integrity and the heart of operators in Queensland.

“The best way to do that is to get the practices of the dodgy operators on the table as soon as we can.”

A spokeswoman for Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath said updates from funeral industry stakeholders was welcomed, and the government “will listen to recommendations from the Office of Fair Trading”.

“The Palaszczuk Government takes these issues very seriously,” the spokeswoman said.

“The Office of Fair Trading received 15,000 complaints across all industries last year – just six related to the funeral industry.

“The Attorney-General is currently seeking advice from the State Coroner and Office of Fair Trading in relation to Mr Janetzki’s letter.”
