Rangers take win off top team

BASEBALL: After the weather stalled the start of their first match against Surfers Paradise, the Toowoomba Rangers came out swinging in yesterday’s double header.

Nicholas Davis and Ketchum Marsh hit two home runs each to win the game 8-6.

Rangers then had to back up straight away after Saturday night’s game was washed out.

Coach Tony Tarca said they struggled in the first innings of the second game.

“They (Surfers) scored five runs off us but didn’t score after that,” he said.

“We battled hard but unfortunately it didn’t go our way.”

The win from the first game made the loss sting a little less.

“Surfers are in the top four so that’s pretty good,” Tarca said.

“To take one off them is very pleasing for me and obviously the team.”

Import Jeffrey Guerrero pitched the whole game yesterday with Ben Little notching up three hits.

It seems the pieces are finally falling into place for the Rangers after a tough start of the season.

“We were struggling for players,” Tarca said.

“We had a lot of young guys and B-grade players who have never played at this level before.”

He said getting players like Little, March and Daniel Luchterhand was a huge help for the team.

“It makes it a lot easier,” he said.

They may be out of finals contention but Rangers are still chasing that winning feeling.

“Moving forward hopefully we can take a few wins off these top teams,” Tarca said.

“Because it’s been such a tough season for us our goal is to split in our last few games of the year.

“If we can do what we did this weekend it’ll go a long way.”

Rangers will travel to Redcliffe next week to play Padres as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations.
