Sixers scorch to WBBL final win

CRICKET: The Sydney Sixers have confirmed their position as the most dominant team in WBBL history with an emphatic nine-wicket win over the Perth Scorchers in Adelaide.

They restricted Perth’s innings to just 99 and made quick work chasing the win.

The Sixers lost just the one wicket as they kept the runs flowing with 14 boundaries to wrap up the final win by the end of the 15th over.

Sydney’s experienced top order showed no signs of faltering.

Even though they have the Big Bash’s top runscorer Ellyse Perry and the likes of Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner, their bowlers did the damage.

Perth won the toss and elected to bat. Sarah Coyte had the first breakthrough just after the powerplay when the dangerous Elyse Villani was stumped on just 16 and the rot set in from there.

The Scorchers lost a wicket in each of the next three overs to be 4-42 by midway through the innings.

Two more wickets to Coyte in the 15th over put Perth further on the back foot, leaving them at 6-66.

Coyte finished with 3-17 and the player-of-the-match title.

Healy led the Sixers’ charge, making 41 off 32, including five fours and a six, which was more than the Scorchers managed between them.

When Healy departed in the 11th over, Perry (36) and Gardner (22) took over and steered the side to victory by the last ball of the 15th over.

It was a fitting finish for captain Perry, who missed last year’s final with a hamstring injury. She hit fours off the final two balls to give the Sixers victory.

Perry said the Sixers had saved the best for last.

“That’s probably one of the best games of cricket we’ve played all season so to be able to turn up on the most important day and put that together was nice,” Perry said.

“It was unfortunate for them today. They probably didn’t put the performance they wanted to but they’ve had a wonderful season.”
