SOCCER: The South West Queensland women had what could have been a promising result snatched away from them at the weekend.

Facing a new look Western Pride outfit the Thunder stood firm for 75 minutes against their WNPL rivals before falling to a 6-3 defeat.

With the scores locked at 3-3 late in the game Thunder women’s coach Scott Teakle said the Pride converted their possession into goals to seal victory.

“They (the Pride) dominated possession for most of the game and that showed in the end,” he said.

“I think we were quite resilient, our keeper Liz Hollitt was brilliant in the first half, and at 3-3 we were in with a real shot for a win.

“But in the end, in the last 10 minutes or so, they were just able to get over the top of us to score those three goals.”

Teakle said the Thunder were able to take some positives away from the match with the scores locked at 1-1 at half-time and 3-3 late in the game.

“We’re confident we can score goals but it’s our defensive structures that need work,” Teakle said.

“This game showed us exactly what work we need to do.

“We just need to work on our structure, defend from the front back, and build our chemistry.

“That structure and chemistry will serve us well late in games when we’re under pressure.

“We’re a young side but we are full of potential and we will improve as the season progresses.”

RAINED OUT: The Thunder’s men’s teams did not play at the weekend after rain in Brisbane made the fields at Cleveland Showgrounds unsafe to play on.
