THE cafe inside Myer at Grand Central will turn off its coffee machines and ovens for the final time in two weeks.

Owner Kit Jones said it had been a hard decision to close the cafe.

“The store is a bit of an icon,” he said.

“It’s been here 25 years, we’ve run it for 15 years, after being in hospitality about 50 years.

“It’s bitter-sweet really.” Mr Jones said he was closing as he needed to retire and could not find a buyer for the cafe.

“Sometimes your body tells you it’s time to slow down and now I’m slowing down,” he said.

“In the past 12 to 18 months it’s been a bit harder than usual.”

Mr Jones is no stranger to Toowoomba, having owned a number of cafes and carveries over his almost 50 year career.

He said he wanted to thank staff for their service and the customers who visited over the years.

“This is the end of an era, but maybe it is the start of another one,” he said.

Mr Jones said he was looking forward to his retirement.

“I’m a fan of pottery and gardening,” he said. “I hope to learn a language.”

In a statement Myer said it was working to find a new owner for the soon to be vacant space.

“Myer wishes to thank (Kit and Bev) for their contribution over the past 15 years,” it said.

“Excuse us for a time while we work with a new partner.”

The cafe will trade for the last time on February 25.
