Dundee’s real estate advice

- ANTHONY KEANE

BUGGER! That’s how many Aussies felt when finding out that the star-studded movie trailer for a new Crocodile Dundee movie was just an ad for Tourism Australia.

Seriously, how good would that film be, with Hugh Jackman, Margot Robbie, a couple of Hemsworths, Russell Crowe, Isla Fisher, Ruby Rose and Jessica Mauboy among its stars?

It’s been 32 years since Crocodile Dundee showed Australia and Australians to the world, and many of Paul Hogan’s famous larrikin lines as Mick Dundee are national treasures.

Think “that’s not a knife”, “yep, me and God, we’d be mates”.

So in the spirit of celebrating a legend, and hoping he will return (there’s an online petition going around), let’s twist some of Mick Dundee’s famous quotes into real estate lessons, just like he twisted his knife into the noggin of a killer croc.

1. “Imagine seven million people all wanting to live together. Yeah, New York must be the friendliest place on earth.”

Sydney and Melbourne in 2018 (5.5 and 4.9 million people) are not quite New York of 1986, but their strong population growth is a key reason for some of the world’s most expensive house prices.

2. “See those rocks? Been standing there for 600 million years. Still be there when you and I are gone. So arguing over who owns them is like two fleas arguing over who owns the dog the live on.”

Unlike fleas, we are allowed to own land, but should remember that property growth is a long-term game measured over decades rather than months or years.

3. “The funnel-web spider can kill a man in eight seconds, just by looking at him.”

A bit of creative licence is always entertaining, but be on the lookout for tall stories that may affect your property purchases or plans.
