HAVE FAITH IN THESE
The story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego recounts how the three men were cast into a furnace by the king Nebuchadnezzar when they refused to bow to his image. They walked out unharmed due to their faith, which inspired Nebuchadnezzar to promote them to high office and respect their religion. They’re also the names of the icon wines from Barossa-based Grant Burge Wines, spearheaded by the Meshach (originally named after Meshach Burge, Grant’s great-grandfather and founder of Burge winemaking). The new releases aren’t the cheapest wines, but their ability to be long-lived (like their namesakes) makes them long-term investments.
ABEDNEGO, SMG, 2014
A blend of Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache with fruit sourced from vines more than 100 years old. The blend creates a rich and full fruit palate complemented with mocha oak. Silky tannins make this approachable right from the outset. Rating: 8.5/10 RRP: $78 Alc: 13.5%
SHADRACH, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 2010
The fruit for the flagship Cabernet comes from the cooler climates of the Corryton Vineyard in the Eden Valley above the Barossa. Fragrant and focused with blackcurrant pastille, dark chocolate and a pan juice meaty richness as it reaches its best. Rating: 8/10 RRP: $92 Alc: 13.5%
MESHACH, SHIRAZ, 2012
The 22nd release of this wine and now under screw cap closure. Potent aromas of deep plum, Belgian chocolate and coffee, and liberally dusted with spices of cinnamon and peppercorns. Rating: 9/10 RRP: $175 Alc: 14%
