Circus hosts special show
Performance for autistic children
A CIRCUS coming to Toowoomba will host a special autism-friendly performance.
Hudson Circus spokeswoman Katy Driver said the performance was an opportunity for all children to enjoy everything that makes a circus unique.
“We took up the challenge for the first time in South Australia where we worked in conjunction with Autism SA,” she said.
“All the families that came to that show were really enjoyed it.”
She said attendees would still get to see the full performance.
“The light and sound will be dimmed, all the lights are white lights, and in between acts when it would go to dark it will stay light,” she said.
“All the lighting effects are taken out, so there will be no strobbing or lights that may startle the children.
“With the contortion act, where the foot archer shoots a balloon, instead she shoots a board. When clown shoots water he shoots at ground, so the unexpected surprises minimised, but they still get to see amazing performances.”
She said the company had aimed to make the circus as sensory friendly as possible.
“We’re the first circus in Australia to ever do it,” she said.
“It’s certainly been a huge success down south.”
Ms Driver said the circus even had special booking provisions for the show.
“You can only book through the phone or box office,” she said.
“We’ll ask if they want to sit at the front or the back and then leave space around them so they don’t have an unknown person beside them who could be a trigger,” she said.
“It’s about make it friendly as possible.”
The show will take place on March 2 at 4pm at the circus tent in Queens Park.
The normal Hudons Circus show will be on from February 21 to March 4.
