Two Toowoomba players managed to steal a piece of the spotlight from some of Australasia’s best touring pros at City Golf Club yesterday with highlight efforts during round two of the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship.

City Golf Club professionals Ian Esson and Chris Britnell had a day to remember.

Esson unleashed an 11-birdie blitz during his round while Britnell pocketed a championship hole-in-one with his perfect four-iron strike on the fourth hole.

Esson’s remarkable up-and-down round of 64 was made up of 11 birdies – including six on the trot from holes two to seven – and five bogies. His 18 holes included only two pars.

Esson’s hot streak with the putter left him at -3 for the tournament, following his opening-day 73.

But unfortunately his cavalier day-two charge wasn’t enough to earn him a weekend start.

Esson’s three-under score saw him miss the half-way cut by one stroke.

City Golf Club member, and Esson’s caddy, Sam Blackshaw, was not only a witness to the fireworks but was credited by Esson for making them possible.

“I was eight under with two holes to play but I finished bogey, bogey,” Esson said.

“That’s the most birdies I’ve shot in a round here and I’ve got Sam to thank for his great job of reading all the puts for me.

“I had a good little run and managed to get it going today.”
