Beautiful view improved on bistro’s roof

THE ground is down, and now the walls are going up on Toowoomba’s first rooftop bistro.

New photographs have revealed the progress made on the ambitious eatery project above the old Westpac building, with most of the steel frames in place.

LJ Hooker Commercial’s Markus Eames said raising the floor by about one metre improved the views of Margaret St and the wider Toowoomba CBD.

“The floor is down on the roof and what we’ve done is picked up the height of the site,” he said.

“It really feels like you’re floating on top.

“What we’ve done to ensure the building will stand there is (build) two massive fire stair structures.

“They tie the building together to cater for the weight and movement.”

While the building is owned by Toowoomba developer Phil Collins, the bistro will be operated by Spotted Cow publican Phil Coorey.

Mr Collins paid $3.7 million for the building in 2015, and Mr Coorey was revealed as the tenant of the rooftop bar in January last year.

The venue will be able to cater for all seasons and weather conditions, with large vinyl sheets to be used as retractable roofing when it rains.

More than 25 tonnes of steel has been incorporated into the design to reinforce the roof and keep the structure intact.

Mr Eames said the building was expected to be handed over to Mr Coorey in April.
