Mustangs and Emus impress
Local league talent show their skills
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Western Mustangs under-20s were dominant in their 48-0 win over Ipswich Jets at the weekend.
It wasn’t the score that impressed coach Eugene Seddon the most, though.
Seddon was most impressed by how his team responded to the challenges he set them in the lead-up to the game.
“The result was great, the boys really performed well, but that wasn’t the only thing that impressed me,” Seddon said.
“We talked about concentrating on in improving in a few key areas before the game and the boys stepped up to the challenge.
“We wanted to concentrate on our play around the edges, particularly our defence, and they did that.”
With his side well in front at halftime, Seddon said he also pleased with how the Mustangs approached the second half.
“They didn’t let up in the second half,” he said.
“We could have eased up but they kept their discipline and played hard.”
With little over a month until their round one under-20s Hastings Deering Colts opener against the Victorian Thunderbolts, Seddon said the Mustangs would continue to focus on performance and not results.
“The results now don’t matter,” he said.
“We want to be 100% ready for that game with Victoria. I’ll set the boys some individual goals between now and then and I’ll be see how they respond.”
Emus win thriller
The South West Queensland Emus secured a thrilling victory over the TRL All Stars at the weekend.
Playing before the Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans at Clive Berghofer left it late in their 28-22 win.
With one minute and one tackle remaining Emus player Willie Duncan capped off a bold Corey McGrady play to break the 22-22 deadlock.
Now in its second year the match once again showcased the strength of the Toowoomba Rugby League competition.
Both teams were stacked with plenty of local talents and were able to produce quality end-to-end football that thrilled the fans.
A draw would’ve been a fitting result for two teams battling for dominance but in the end Emus were able to escape with a win.
