SOCCER: The South West Queensland Thunder turned early season potential into victory at the weekend.

With six goals in their first two matches of the season, the Thunder have been impressive going forward without a win to show for their effort before Saturday’s game.

Led once again by a dangerous frontline, the Thunder were able to capitalise on their attacking prowess, securing a 3-2 away win over Brisbane City.

Senior men’s team manager Jason Hall said the win was the result of concentrated team effort.

“I think it was a very strong performance from the team,” Hall said.

“The boys really came together for the win.

“We knew it would a tough start to the season with five games away so to secure some points early is great.”

Hall was particularly impressed with the Thunder’s defensive efforts.

“Our backline looked sharp,” he said.

“It was the first time we’ve been able to pair Federico (Brusaca) and Keagan (Sheridan) together which is great. I think they will be one of the best centre back

pairings in the competition.

“Our fullbacks Wade Hall and Kaleb Burgess were also impressive.

“It’s a good sign for us because we know we will have a strong attack but our defensive is starting to come together as well.”

Winger Chris Hatfield opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a thunderous strike.

“We’d had all the early running but nothing to show for it,” Hall said.

“Then there was a blackout which didn’t help things. Chris got us on the sheet soon after the power was back and I reckon it’d have to be goal of the round.”

City equalised soon after Hatfield’s strike and the teams were locked at 1-1 at halftime.

Anthony Grant and Jacob Bigby added to the Thunder’s tally before a late City penalty added to drama to the last minutes of the game.
