RUGBY UNION: Darling Downs teams stood tall at last weekend’s Aubigny Tens to finish with the day’s major spoils.

The annual Aubigny Barbarians and Toowoomba Bears Rugby Club tournament continued its emergence at Gold Park on Saturday with a record 23 teams lining up for the event’s fifth edition.

USQ 1 took out the Open Division with a 19-7 win over Grain Train in the final.

USQ won through to the decider with a 10-0 win over Aubigny Barbarians Red while Grain Train defeated Duavatz in the other semi-final.

Other teams to win through to the quarter-finals were Highfields, NRG Electrical, Condamine and Southern Bay Cyclones.

The men’s division two/overs was won by Rangers F & O who defeated Aubigny Barbarians 12-5 in the final.

The tournament featured a women’s sevens division for the first time.

The final was won by 1st Signals Regiment which produced a stoic performance to down Bears 15-12.

“It was one of the gutsiest wins of the day,” Aubigny Barbarians president and tournament organiser Phil Cooper said.

“With only six players they were able to beat Bears who had a full contingent of players and a reserves bench.”

Cooper said the day catered for a full contingent of teams from across southern Queensland.

“It was a terrific day of rugby played in good conditions and we’ve had great feedback to the tournament,” Cooper said.

“It’s all looking good for the future and we’ll begin planning for next year.”
