LIONS PASS ON SKILLS
AUSSIE RULES: The Brisbane Lions are doing their part to ensure the future of Australian Rules Football.
Players from the men’s and women’s squad have been touring the Darling Downs this week to pass on their skills and knowledge to young players.
As well as a number of skills clinics the Lions have visited a number of schools.
Fairholme College Aussie Rules team captain Grace Elliott was among those excited to see the Lions, especially women’s star Sabrina Frederick-Traub, in town.
“It’s always good when they are here - it’s a real treat for all the girls,” Elliott said.
“Everyone gets to learn new things and enjoy themselves.
“And when they see someone like Sabrina it shows them there is a pathway for them to follow.”
Full-forward Frederick-Traub said visiting schools and conducting clinics was one of the benefits of being a Lions player.
“I love coming to the Downs. It reminds me of where I grew up in Perth,” she said.
“I love seeing what the kids have in terms of talent and enthusiasm.
“Growing up I didn’t have any female footballers who I could look up to but I did have some female athletes to admire.
“For me, it’s about putting in the effort to come to these things to show the kids we do care.
“And to explain to them that nothing is unreachable.
“We’re not trying to be untouchable human beings. We just want to be someone they can aspire to be like.”
