GOLF: City Golf Club has helped celebrate the success of the 2018 Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship with the announcement of a prize-money increase for next year’s tournament.

The 2019 event will be boosted by an additional $25,000 — taking the tournament prize-money pool to $150,000.

City Golf Club president Eddie Britnell yesterday confirmed the prize money injection which will help maintain the tournament’s standing on the Australasian Tour calendar.

This year’s championship was won by West Australian Daniel Fox who saw off all challengers in the final round to defeat one of the strongest fields seen at City since the tournament moved to the club in 2009.

The championship prior to being adopted by the City club 10 years ago was battling flagging support.

“We are really happy with the quality of this year’s field and the attendance, given what a busy sport weekend it was in Toowoomba,” Britnell said.

“The aim now is to make the tournament bigger and better and with our sponsor and corporate support we are proud to announce next year’s event will increase in prize money to $150,000.

“Each year we also look at incremental improvements in our facilities and that’s one of the things we’ll be discussing with the PGA at our upcoming de-brief.”

Britnell also paid tribute to the tournament’s band of volunteers referred to as “The Red Army”.

“There are well over 60 club members, former members and members from elsewhere who make this all possible,” Britnell said.

“Without their tireless work the tournament simply couldn’t happen.

“Our thanks also goes to Toowoomba Regional Council for their support.”
