Umbrellas out as rain on way
Heavy falls expected from today
HEAVY rains similar to the ones that caused chaos on the coast could hit Toowoomba as early as this morning.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jess Gardner said the town did not receive much rain yesterday.
“We’re expecting a lot more activity today than yesterday,” Ms Gardner said.
“We’ve got an offshore trough and broad upper trough coming in, combining with a moist air mass to give us some pretty heavy rainfall and some thunderstorms.
“If the storm is over the top of you, you might see some pretty locally heavy falls in those areas.”
Ms Gardner said it would also warm up today.
“The average temperature for February is 27 degrees maximum and yesterday we were looking at 23 degrees,” she said.
“It will be back up close to average today and tomorrow.”
The forecast led to a number of events having to change plans.
Short film festival Flickerfest was due to be held on the lawns outside the Empire Theatre tonight.
“Due to the predicted wet weather on Saturday night, Flickerfest will now be screened in the Armitage Centre,” event organisers said on Facebook.
While roads in coastal areas have been closed because of flash flooding, no roads in the Toowoomba region have been closed.
A Queensland Police spokesperson said it was important to drive to the conditions and if there was a road that was flooded, forget it.
“Slow down, turn your headlights on and increase stopping distance,” the spokesperson said.
