Residents worried about road

Petition for lights at intersection

-

WILLOW Glen Retirement Community residents are busy collecting signatures for a petition to address the dangerous situation at the intersection of Ruthven and Donahue Sts.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki met with residents who have been shaken by multiple near misses and at least one accident.

Mr Janetzki said six crashes which occurred on Ruthven St, between Alderley and Stenner Sts, in the past 12 months were reported to police.

Residents’ committee president Elizabeth Grace said the intersection was a major safety issue for residents, parents of children who attended the childcare centre next door and customers of the many other businesses in the neighbouring shopping complex.

“It can be very dangerous to turn right from Donahue onto Ruthven St,” Mrs Grace said.

“Many drivers also use the intersection to perform u-turns which has resulted in at least one accident involving a Willow Glen resident.”

Mr Janetzki said Willow Glen residents were collecting signatures to petition for the installation of traffic lights at the intersection.

“We also see a lot of children running from the sporting ovals at Nell E Robinson Park across all four lanes of Ruthven Street to reach McDonald’s,” he said.

“A new set of traffic lights would provide pedestrians with a safe place to cross this busy section of Ruthven St.”

Residents said they raised their concerns multiple times over the past few years with both the council and Main Roads, both which claimed the other was responsible for the issue.

Members of the public can sign the petition at Willow Glen Retirement Community.
