BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

SHARP SUITS, RICH SHADES AND STATEMENT PIECES ARE THE LOOK FOR AUTUMN GLAM THIS YEAR, A REFRESHING CHANGE FROM TRADITIONAL BLACKS

- WORDS: CHANTAY LOGAN

There’s a different mood moving fashion circles this season. David Jones ambassador Jess Gomes says there are four trends spicing up our usually sombre autumn-winter wardrobes.

CLASSIC LUXURY

From gorgeous gowns (Rachel Gilbert has some beauties) to timeless accessories, this is the place to splurge. Invest in buy-now, love-forever classics that will work this season and for many more. “A chunky Alexander Wang bag is a must for me,” Jess says. “Be fearless and make a bold statement.”

SHARP SUITING

Make an expertly tailored jacket your calling card. Wear it with a razor-sharp pair of pants, throw it over a soft dress, play it down with denim or take the trend into new territory with a blazer dress. “I think this is such a boss look,” Jess says. “I feel the most powerful when I’m in a suit, whether that’s the whole suit or a blazer to match with jeans and a classic tee.” Clean and sharp is the goal – if your budget stretches to Balmain you’re in luck, but savvy buys can be just as effective if you focus on fit. “I get everything tailored now, the way it fits is so important,” Jess says. “Camilla and Marc and Saba have done some amazing blazers this season.”

NIGHT GARDEN

Pick darkly exotic flowers on bolder base colours to take the floral trend into autumn. “Zimmermann has really nailed this look, making it classic and beautiful,” Jess says. “You can wear a floral dress with a structured bag to make it look edgier, more modern and assured.”

RICH COLOUR

Snap up emerald green and ruby red statement pieces in the slinkiest of fabrics — a far cry from the usual winter blackout. “It won’t be a question of ‘what shade of black am I wearing today?’ as I’ve never seen so much colour in Australian womenswear,” says David Jones managing director clothing and general merchandise David Collins. “Striking colours such as emerald green, fuchsia and bold red make up the palette for the season, moving away from the traditional muted, dark tones we see on the runway at this time of year.” Team with bright and bold accessories to take a sartorial stand.
