CREATE A SANCTUARY

DECOR EXPERT SHAYNNA BLAZE SHARES HER TIPS ON HOW TO CREATE A BATHROOM THAT FEELS MORE LIKE A FIVE-STAR DAY SPA

- WORDS: LIFESTYLE’S SHAYNNA BLAZE

If there’s something we could all do with more of, it’s time. Especially ‘me’ time. While typically the bathroom is viewed as just a functional space, it’s evolving more and more into a private place to retreat to, to take time out and relax.

As a result, bathroom design has taken on many of the principles of day spa design. Here are some ideas for designing a bathroom that will give you that day spa feel at home.

HAVE A FREESTANDING BATH

The one thing that screams day spa is a freestanding bath. If you have the room then definitely include one – the deeper and larger the better. Depending on the space you have, either let it take centre stage in the middle of the bathroom or place it next to a window for a bath with a view. If there is space outside the bathroom window to create a private garden area, that will provide a beautiful backdrop to the whole bathroom.

INSTALL A RAIN SHOWER HEAD

A rain showerhead is as close as you can get to a full body massage while standing up. It not only looks luxurious it feels great too and will help wash away the worries of the day.

INCLUDE NATURAL ELEMENTS

Draw inspiration from nature and include texture and natural elements like timber and stone for an earthy and organic feel. A whole wall out of timber or stone will create a striking backdrop.

Or just use natural materials as rustic accents in a bathroom such as timber on the vanity, a timber towel ladder and stone floors.
