Career change a blooming good idea

-

Why are you making a career change?

Floristry is something I have always wanted to do but nursing and midwifery was what I had been trained in. I injured my back badly two years ago and that made me think about doing what I have always wanted to do.

How did you begin the transition?

I started learning what I could by myself. I did a couple of different workshops. I still work two days a week with a doctor’s clinic as a clinic nurse then the rest of the week is juggling kids – ages eight, six and three – and doing flowers. The Dream Job show has opened a lot of doors and made me realise the potential I have and how big I can go. Now having contacts in that field, I can pursue it a lot more.

I have been getting a lot of wedding requests recently. Hopefully that will ramp up a bit and I can drop at least one of my two days a week of nursing.

Are you studying again?

I have decided to take up a career change course through Bloom College Melbourne, for which I was offered a scholarship through Dream Job.

I am self taught but it will be great going back to the very start and learning things properly. It’s not a certificate but with floristry you don’t really need certificates any more.

I’m doing the course one day a week so it will be for 24 weeks, about six months.
