Storm star under injury cloud

-

Billy Slater is racing the clock to be fit for Round One.

A notable absentee from last night’s testimonial match for Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston, it is understood there’s a consideration to rest Slater for the Storm’s season opener against the Bulldogs in Perth.

After landing awkwardly on his shoulder in last Friday’s World Club Challenge, the champion fullback was sent for precautionary scans.

Word out of the club is a ‘jarred shoulder’ but should Slater continue to experience any soreness or discomfort, he won’t be hurried back to the field.

Versatile 23-year-old Jahrome Hughes filled the void for the testimonial match, while Young Tonumaipea has spent plenty of time in the role over his four years with the Storm should Slater be rested.

Meanwhile, South Sydney have suffered a blow with exciting winger Campbell Graham suffering a broken hand.

The 18-year-old picked up the injury in the Rabbitohs’ trial win last weekend over Wigan and is unlikely to be fit for Round One.

Graham’s injury is expected to keep him out of action for about four weeks which would mean his likely return is the second round of the season.

Fortunately the Rabbitohs are flush with backline options with Braidon Burns, Hymel Hunt, Jacob Gagan, Richie Kennar and Robert Jennings all possible replacements.
