Plumaro decision on hold as wet threatens plans
Plans for promising Toowoomba two-year-old Plumaro for today and beyond are up in the air as wet weather threatens to disrupt weekend racing plans.
Plumaro is due to have her third race start in today’s Two-Year-Old Handicap (1350m) at Doomben following her fast-finishing second over 1200 metres at her city debut two weeks ago.
But heavy track conditions at Doomben yesterday in the face of forecast further rain today has most horse connections in a quandary, including Plumaro’s trainer Kevin Kemp.
“If the track stayed in the slow range we’d be keen to run her,” Kemp said.
“Her breeding suggests she’ll handle it okay, not that that always works out.
“If it gets to a heavy 10, that’s another story and we’d need to have a good think about what to do with her then.
“But she’s so fit and well it’s silly not to run her if it’s at all possible so we’ll have to make a late call tomorrow.”
Kemp initially chose the March 17 Two-Year-Old Jewel (1200m) at the Gold Coast as Plumaro’s next target but is now second-guessing that plan. “The way she raced over 1200 metres at Doomben last start has me wondering now if she will be at all suited by 1200 metres at the coast. The prize money is nice but there is a 1350-metre race at Doomben the week before that she might appreciate more.
“So there are a couple of options for her including having a break and looking ahead to winter with her where she’ll be nominated for the Sires and JJ Atkins.
“But we’ll just see what tomorrow brings first.”
Meanwhile Kemp’s emerging sprinter Mr Marbellouz will be nominated for next week’s Class 6 Plate (1200m) at Doomben.
