Autism workshop targets health workers, educators
NELLE Frances knows well the challenges of autism and she’s using her extensive experience to educate the wider community.
Ms Frances will be delivering her new Autism Sensory Detective and Post School Transition Workshop in Toowoomba next month.
Her new workshop will provide much-needed information to school staff, health professionals, community support workers and families of individuals with autism.
“We know that autism is a diverse, lifelong condition, so knowledge about different age groups and life stages is essential,” she said.
“That’s why I developed this new educational tool.”
Ms Frances’ 27-year-old autistic son, Sam Wall, will be guest speaker on the day. He’ll share his perception of growing up on the autism spectrum.
“The sensory, social and emotional challenges of autistic individuals require support models that grow and develop in line with the age of that individual.”
Ms Frances has been delivering her renowned Sensory Detective Workshop in Australia for over a decade, but she knows that education about autism must also reflect the needs of adolescents and young adults on the spectrum.
In response to demand, Ms Frances created her new workshop, streamlining content into a format that will be suitable to a broader audience, from newly diagnosed to those finishing school.
The workshop will take place from 9am-4pm on March 22 at the All Seasons Function Centre, 302 North Street, Toowoomba.
