RUGBY LEAGUE: Toowoomba Junior Rugby League will take its first steps to establishing a girls competition tomorrow night.

Beginning with a come and try session at Valleys Rugby League Club and then a five week under-12 girls only competition, the TJRL is focused on providing league pathways to local girls.

Demand for girls rugby league is on the rise according to TJRL girls co-ordinator Jackie Stephson.

“It (girls’ rugby league) is one of the fastest growing sections of the game,” Stephson said.

“We decided to see if there was any interest among the local clubs for an under-12 girls competition and the response has been great.

“We’ve had a lot of phone calls and plenty of interested players and parents asking questions.

“We already have under-14, 16 and 18 girls teams we take to Brisbane to play but we’re hoping to establish girls only competitions in Toowoomba in the future.

“This (the U12 event) is the first step toward that by getting more girls to experience and enjoy the game.”

Wednesday night’s session, which interested players can still register for, will focus on skill development.

“There will be a number of NRL development officers and coaches present,” Stephson said.

“The focus will be on teaching the girls the key skills of the game in a fun way.

“If there is enough interest we may continue the skills session before each Friday night game.”
