How residents would spend $20m

Tourism high on list ahead of federal funding

THE proposals will be put forward by the Toowoomba Regional Council and private enterprises soon, but residents have already suggested what $20 million projects they’d like to see built from the new Regional Growth Fund.

Regional Development Minister and Groom MP John McVeigh opened the nominations period for the $272 million fund on Friday.

Mayor Paul Antonio said the TRC would submit several potential projects before the closing date of April 27, but readers on The Chronicle’s Facebook page have their own ideas.

To be awarded the funds, the applicant will have prove the project would create jobs, drive economic growth and build a stronger community.

Suggestions included the need for more sporting events, tourism sites, and an expansion of services for the surrounding areas of Toowoomba.

“Gondolas to table top; Quarry gardens and lagoons; V8 racing. Inland rail. We have one stunning little city with very little to enhance tourism,” Dean Symons wrote.

“Let’s put Toowoomba on the map and reap the benefits. Surely the wealthy side of Toowoomba can see this.”

Others said the roads network needed to be addressed, something Cr Antonio has highlighted in the past.

“Road repairs in places other than Toowoomba!” Michele Fowler added.

“As long as most of the roads in the CBD appear to be in good order there’s no reason to worry about the rest of the shire,” Jerry Depaws also wrote.

While other residents wanted to use the money to help lower rates, the Regional Growth Fund is to be used for a major project that would drive job opportunities and economic prosperity.

Cr Antonio said the potential projects could revolve around tourism, logistics or growing the economies in towns like Oakey.
