Toowoomba filly finishes fast to seal win

-

RACING: Toowoomba filly Plumaro is on target for a “Jewel” mission after enhancing her growing reputation with another breath-taking victory at Doomben on Saturday.

Plumaro ($4.40) made it two wins from three starts with a zooming finish for apprentice Jag Guthmann-Chester in the Two-Year-Old Handicap over 1200m.

The Spirit Of Boom youngster charged home late from well back on the home turn to claim runner-up Only Wanna Sing ($3.80 fav) inside the final 150m before clearing out to score by 13 ⁄4 lengths.

Fish ‘N’ Snitz ($31) was another four lengths away third.

Plumaro’s only defeat was a fast-finishing second behind Mishani Huster at Doomben three weeks earlier.

That followed her booming debut victory at Clifford Park in January.

Trainer Kevin Kemp said Plumaro is now likely to tackle the $250,000 QTIS Two-YearOld Jewel (1200m) on the Gold Coast in two weeks time.

“She was great. Unbelievable,” Kemp said.

“She copped a couple of little checks in the run and she had plenty of work to do in the straight.

“But I was never concerned about her picking the leaders up — I know how well she can find the line.

“If she comes through today all right I’d say we’ll probably look at that nice Gold Coast race with her next.”

Mr Marbellouz ($1.30 fav, pictured) completed a dream day for the Kemp stable when he carried on his winning way with another commanding display in the Class 6 Plate (1200m).

The four-year-old racked up his fifth race win from six starts when Guthmann-Chester guided him to a four-length victory over Mogador ($13).

Mr Marbellouz’s has amassed a cumulative winning margin of 301⁄2 lengths in his five race victories.

Kemp’s winning double led a profitable day for Toowoombatrained horses on Saturday’s 11-race card with trainers Tony Sears and Michael Nolan also in the winner’s stall.

Upstart Pride ($9.50) primed for his Goldmarket assignment in two weeks time when he returned to winning form for Nolan in the Open Handicap (1200m).

Nolan’s second runner in the race, Jumbo Prince ($16), ran home solidly to finish midfield on his way to the April 7 Listed Weetwood Handicap at Clifford Park.

Toowoomba Cup prospect Don’t Tell Mama ($8) added to Sears’s good city strike-rate with a strong-finishing win for apprentice Emma Ljung in the Fillies and Mares Benchmark 80 Handicap (1350m).
