CRICKET: Patient knocks from Chris Gillam and Brian May helped Western Districts to a commanding position on day one of their clash with Highfields Railways.

Sent in to bat at Heritage Oval Gillam (97) and May (100) steered Wests to 6-290 at the close of play on Saturday.

May said his side were surprised by their opponents decision to send them in to bat but made the most of the situation.

“It (Saturday) was a good day for us – I think we played really well,” May said.

“It was a bit surprising being sent in to bat but we knew what we needed to achieve and we did that.

“We knew we had to score about 210 runs to get the points we needed for third just in case it rained.

“Chris’ knock was excellent and from there we just tried to keep the score ticking over.”

Heading into day two of the match May said the team will focus on sharpening up their effort in the field.

“Our bowlers will need to perform well – that’s a given,” he said.

“But we’re also aware that we need to sharpen up in the field and keep the pressure on.”

Alex Flett (26), Matt Hallas (16) and Cameron Brimblecombe (20) also contributed runs.

Ben Trimmer was the pick of the Highfields Railways bowlers taking 3-55 off his 12 overs. Blake Martin, Tom Hughes and Pat Turner also took a wicket each.
