Pirates of Penzance sets sail for Empire Theatre
THE Empire Theatres’ highly anticipated 2018 major production,
Pirates of Penzance opens in just two weeks, with the cast working hard to put the final touches on the famously funny Gilbert and Sullivan musical.
Pirates of Penzance opens at the Empire Theatre on March 14, running until Saturday, March 17.
Featuring a stellar cast and orchestra, including international singer and actor Michael Cormick as the Pirate King, Brisbane-based actor Alex Woodward as Frederic and rising opera star Sophie Salvesani as Mabel, Pirates of Penzance will be the highlights of the Empire Theatres’ 2018 season.
Popular local favourites Angela Ponting and Matthew Collins also return to the Empire Theatre stage as Major-General Stanley and hard of hearing nursemaid, Ruth.
While this is his first Gilbert and Sullivan role, Michael Cormick was delighted to take up the challenging role of the Pirate King because it was so different to the parts he played in the past.
“I knew the Pirate King was something I always wanted to have a look at and when this came up I thought, yes, because it’s something really comedic in a sense and it’s something really different for me,” Mr Cormick said.
Heritage Bank CEO Peter Lock said Heritage Bank was delighted to sponsor the Empire Theatre’s major annual production for the 12th year in a row.
