USQ have opened their 2018 Toowoomba Football League campaign with a convincing win.

Last year’s beaten finalists turned the tables on their grand final foes Willowburn, recording a 6-2 win.

USQ coach Matt Proctor said the win did not quell the anguish of losing a grand final but it was good to start the season on a positive note.

“It is a very positive start to the season - it sets a good benchmark for us,” he said.

“I’m very pleased with the team’s effort and the result, but we’re not going to get carried away with it. It’s only the first game of the season.”

Proctor said a determined defensive effort and team work were the key to USQ’s win.

“I think we worked hard off the ball and played well as a unit,” Proctor said.

“We also put away our chances. Willowburn had their fair share early and if they’d put away those opportunities it could’ve been a very different game.”

Despite the lopsided scoreline Proctor said Willowburn deserved credit for their performance.

“I think the score was a fair reflection of the game and how it was played,” he said.

“I don’t think it degrades Willowburn nor does it flatter us in any way.

“They (Willowburn) were tough opposition and played well – we were just able to dig in as unit at the end.”
