CRICKET: Samson Ryan has his sights on a Queensland cap and he knows exactly what he needs to do to claim it.

The young all-rounder, playing for Darling Downs at the Queensland School Sport 15-19 years State Cricket Championships, is keen to spend as much time as possible at the crease.

“My goal for the championships is to get as much quality time in the middle as possible and score some runs,” the Toowoomba Grammar School student said.

“With the ball my goal is to bowl nice and quick and get the batsman playing forward.

“That’s important if I want to make the Queensland side.

“More importantly though, I just want to help us (Darling Downs) win the tournament.”

Darling Downs opened the championships with a harrowing defeat on Sunday.

Chasing South Coast’s 107, Darling Downs were well on track at 3-90 before collapsing to be all out for 101.

Coach Kris Glass his side learned a few valuable lessons from the game.

“We didn’t back ourselves,”

Glass said.

“I think some of the boys were just a little afraid to play their shots – South Coast bowled well though.

“Today (Monday) they’re playing a lot better. There’s more confidence and they’re working hard.

“They played some nice shots and our bowling has been tight.”

Ryan was among the runs yesterday, scoring 57 off 94.

Sam Neil also made a significant impact with the bat, scoring 86 as Darling Downs posted 218 runs against Sunshine Coast.
