OVER 60: LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL

-

Edited by: Joy Noble and David Bennett Publisher: Wakefield Press RRP: $29.95 Reviewer: Mary Ann Elliott

THIS compendium of true stories is inspired by several people in their 60s and 70s who are actively engaged with life.

Why have Joy and David compiled this book? Because prevailing paradigms in our society still persist with the idea that when you are “old” you’re supposed to put your feet up and take it easy.

There are no exceptional people here; just men and women who refuse to accept that they are past their “best-by” date. They believe that life is for living to the full at any and every age; with the later years enhanced by new challenges, insights, learning and accrued wisdom.

One contributor says, “The first 60 years was just the warmup for however many more are to come”. Most speak of a life of creativity and fulfilment; feeling useful and contributing to making a difference to their world.

There comes a time to say goodbye to the paid workforce. New freedoms open up, with more time to spend with family, new paths to explore, travel to indulge in.

Many say they enjoy living in the moment and valuing the simple things.

There’s time for visits to the library to learn new computer skills. Travel and technology are good for the brain.

All agree that retirement opens up new horizons and offers fresh experiences and greater understanding.

Whether travelling, restoring an old house, tracking down family history, bike riding, searching for opals, line dancing, joining a writing or reading group, volunteering in a museum; the opportunities are endless.

Just as well they don’t have fulltime jobs because they would never have time to go to work!
