Restockers active at Roma

ROMA

THERE was a yarding of 4,581 head at Roma Store Sale with the rain holding off until the last few pens. The yarding was mixed with some drought affected cattle from the Territory. All buyers were operating in stronger market with improved prices ofup to 30c/kg in places. Background­ers were plentiful with visiting drovers also in attendance and successful­ly filling orders.

Restockers were very active in the market on plain condition breeders and cows to slaughter also lifted by up to 20c/kg.

Steer calves topped at 402c to average 365c/kg. Heifer calves topped at 356c/kg. Light weight drought affected yearling steers under 200kg to restockers reached 396c to average 391c/kg. Yearling steers under 280kg topped at 410c to average 366c/kg.

Trade steers topped at 360c to average 350c/kg. Yearling heifers to restockers under 280kg made to 348c to average 319c/kg. Trade heifers made to 312c to average 288c/kg.

Cows to restockers made to 238c to average 228c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows to processors made to 222c and heavy cows to slaughter topped at 245c to average 240c/kg. Cows with calves at foot topped at $1,720/unit.

TOOWOOMBA

NUMBERS declined by 178 head and overall quality was generally good. A fair panel of buyers was present and most were operating in a dearer market. Light weight yearling steers to restockers gained close to 20c, while yearling steers to feed improved by 5c to 10c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to feed or background lifted in price by 17c to 19c/kg. The plainer end of the medium weight yearling heifers to feed experience­d very little change in price, however the better lines sold to a dearer trend. Heavy grown steers and bullocks averaged 4c to 9c/kg dearer. A lift in the quality of the cows resulted in prices improving by 11c to 15c/kg and more in places.

A handful of steer calves returned to the paddock at 384.2c and a small sample of vealer heifers sold to the trade at 312.2c/kg. Light weight yearling steers to restockers made to 370.2c with most around 350c/kg. Yearling steers in the 280-330kg range to feed or background made to 336.2c to average 326c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 296c and made to 320c and a small sample returning to the paddock made to 335.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed averaged 291c and made to 295.2c with some to the local trade reaching 305.2c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to feed or background averaged 305c and made to 325.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged in the early 280c range and made to 296.2c/kg.

Heavy grown steers to export slaughter averaged 286c and made to 290.2c while the bullock portion made to 295.2c to average close to 292c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows average 198c and the best of the medium weights averaged 232c/kg. A fair sample of good heavy cows made to 243.2c to average 235c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 269.2c/kg.

WARWICK

THERE was a yarding of 1,100 head of cattle, down 133 head week-on-week. The yarding consisted of a good supply of young cattle and grown cattle were also in good numbers. The yarding of young cattle consisted of a good quality offering of yearling steers and heifers, with several runs of well-bred cattle suitable for feeders and background­ers, local restockers were also active in the market. There were also some well finished yearlings that were acquired by trade buyers.

Competitio­n was stronger with restocker weaner steers selling to a top of 359c, while a run of well-bred weaner heifers topped at 345c/kg. Feeder steers were up by 4c to 5c with medium weights selling to 328c to average 297c/kg. Trade yearling steers gained 20c selling to 331c and trade yearling heifers topped at 318c/kg. Feeder heifers sold to 296c to average 279c/kg.

The yarding of export cattle consisted of a good yarding of bullocks and steers, heifers were in fair numbers, while there was a good penning of cows. The yarding of bullocks and steers consisted mainly of well finished 3 and 4 score cattle. Prices generally improved by 10c, some sales more, with a range of 290c to a top of 302c/kg. Heifers sold up to 279c/kg. The cow market was 15c to 18c/kg dearer, with several pens of well finished cows through the sale. Medium weight 3 score cows averaged 228c, while heavy cows sold to 252c/kg.

GYMPIE

A RAIN-reduced yarding of 1381 cattle at Sullivan Livestock’s Gympie Sale saw the market dearer for all descriptio­ns. Cattle were drawn from Gin Gin, Mt Perry, Childers Gayndah, Mundubbera, Booubyjan, Tansey, Goomeri, Brooweena, Woolooga, Eumundi, Kenilworth and all local areas.

Meatworks cattle met spirited competitio­n with quality Brahman cows from R and B Sommerfiel­d, Brahrock, Beaver Rock making $2.55. Bongmuller Pastoral Co, Woolooga sold Brahman cows for $2.47. Garglen’s brahman cows also made $2.47. Droughtmas­ter cows from S and J English, Glastonbur­y made $2.49. Droughtmas­ter cross steers from N and L Brown, Tiaro made $2.85. Heavy bulls sold to a top of $2.68 for a charolais bull, from Booubyjan, to return $2507.

Heavy feeder steers were dearer with droughtmas­ter cross steers from Greg Nuske, Kin Kin selling for $2.86 and $2.83. Charbray cross steers from R and H Jones, Brooweena made $2.86 and $2.85 selling to a top of $1243. Droughtmas­ter steers from Greg and Kevin Birt, Scotchy Pocket made $3.09 to return $1219 and $1126. While the younger pens sold for $3.18. Charbray steers, 18 months from Maree Duncombe, Conondale made $3.25. Quality charbray steers from Alan and Jan Salmon, Widgee made $3.30. Simmental cross steers from Brad and Melinda Murnane made $3.52. Droughtmas­ter steers from Les Howard, Aramara made $3.55. Wangella Pastoral Co, Kilkivan sold brahman cross steers for $3.91 to average $3.87.

Feeder heifers were in limited supply and quality and sold to a top of $2.80 but generally selling for $2.65 to $2.78. Quality droughtmas­ter heifers from Greg and Kevin Birt made $3.23 and $3.19. Quality angus cross heifers from Rockemer Grazing, Broweena made $3.13 and $3.09. Simmental cross heifers from Brad and Melinda Murnane made $3.07. Droughtmas­ter heifers from AD and HM Pratt made $3.55. Grey brahman heifers from Ron Kirk and family, Yenda, Gayndah made $3.63 and $3.65. Better quality weaner heifers generally sold from $2.80 to $3.17. Wangella Pastoral Co, Kilkivan sold a good quality line of brahman cross weaner heifers topping at $3.31 to average $3.11.

Cows and calves sold to a top of $1525 for droughtmas­ter cows with brahman cross calves from JG and ME Fletcher, Cooroy. Brahman cross cows and calves from Rosedale sold for $1500.

DALBY

WIDESPREAD rain throughout the supply areas restricted the movement of cattle, resulting in a smaller yarding of 2,768 head, down 3,450 head. All classes of cattle were affected in the lower numbers, however yearlings were well supplied and there was a fair penning of grown cattle. The yarding of young cattle consisted mainly of medium and heavy weight yearling steers and heifers. Quality was good with the largest percentage of the cattle in 2 and 3 score condition, and there was mainly well bred cattle offered. The market was much stronger with feeder steers selling 15c to 20c dearer from 285c to 313c with the heavy weights averaging 305c and medium weights under 400 kg averaging 295c/kg. Feeder heifers gained 8c topping at 310c to average 288c/kg.

The yarding of export cattle consisted of a fair penning of bullocks, steers and cows, with several pens of heifers through the sale. Quality of the grown steers was very good, with buyers competing strongly on most lines, pushing prices up by 12c to 14c from 282c to 311c, with steers averaging 298c and bullocks averaging 292c/kg. Heifers sold to a top of 286c/kg. The cow market improved by 12c to 17c, with medium weight 3 scores averaging 231c and heavy cows sold to a top of 251c/kg.

GRAFTON

THE cattle yarded at Grafton on Tuesday totalled 361. The market for bullocks improved another 10c/kg to reach a top of 294c/kg. Cows did the same to sell at 246c/kg and heavy heifers sold to 265c/kg. Vealers to processors sold dearer to top at 290c/kg. Recent rain has definitely improved the restocker market, with angus steers selling at 380c/kg.

HIGHLIGHTS

RAY Robertson bullocks sold to 272c/kg, weighed 718kg to return $2187/hd.

Wavehill Pastoral bullocks sold to 281c/kg, weighed 715kg to return $2006/hd.

Rob Giggins bullocks sold to 291c/kg, weighed 760kg to return $2206/hd.

B.A. Ensby bullocks sold to 294c/kg, weighed 560kg to return $1642/hd.

Greg Kerfoot feeder steers sold to 288c/kg, weighed 418kg to return $1195/hd to feedlotter­s.

Keys and McDonald heifers sold to 262c/kg, weighed 425kg to return $1072/hd.

L.J. and A.J. Abraham cows sold to 244c/kg, weighed 640kg to return $1330/hd.

LISMORE

A LIGHT yarding of 180 cattle sold at Lismore saleyard on Tuesday. Following good rains, prices rose.

Vealer sold to the processor and local butcher $2.60 to $2.88/kg.

Darby Tickles simmentalc­ross heifers topped at $2.88/kg for $951.

Secondary vealers sold in the $2.40 to $2.60/kg range.

Weaners suitable for restockers were in short supply. Lightweigh­t anguscross steers topped at $3.60/kg.

The cow market showed improvemen­t. Heavy cows sold from $2.05 to $2.28/kg for returns of $1040 to $1368. Medium cows sold from $1.60 to $2/kg.

CASINO

THERE were two sales last week, with prices showing some further improvemen­ts.

On Wednesday, 1451 head were sold at an average of $819.27/head (254.5c/kg). Average weight for the sale was 322kg. The vealer market had an average of 278.4c/kg (at 243kg), topped by Aiden Wilkinson with one head at $1204.14. Cows averaged 212.1c/kg (at 475kg), with Dean and Tim Clark topping the market with two head at $1496.30/head. An A.F. Gillespie bull got highest price for the sale at $2289.66.

Ray White had good numbers for its Friday Store Sale, with 771 head sold. Average price: $1004/head. WEDNESDAY
