Chancellor’s Scholarship for student

-

SHANA Stokes has made it her life’s mission to help others; but now, thanks to the University of Southern Queensland, she’s the one receiving a helping hand.

The first-year nursing student was this week awarded USQ’s top scholarship, which Miss Stokes says couldn’t have come at a better time.

“When I found out I would be receiving the Chancellor’s Scholarship, I was blown away,” Miss Stokes said.

Aged just 17, Miss Stokes juggles two jobs and a full-time study load. She also dedicates several hours every week to as a hospital volunteer, helping people who’ve experienced breast cancer.

“This scholarship means I can put more time into my studies, and can continue volunteering without completely wearing myself out,” she said.

Nursing is a family affair for Miss Stokes, who was first introduced to the world of scrubs and stethoscopes by her aunt.

“Talking to my aunt about her experiences as a nurse instilled me with this passion to care for people,” she said.

Miss Stokes has joined the university with an exemplary academic record, finishing high school at St Joseph’s College with an OP1.

“A lot of people ask me why I chose nursing, but I just can’t picture myself doing anything else,” she said.

USQ has awarded more than a million dollars’ worth of scholarships and bursaries in 2018 so far thanks to foundering from donors, government, and the university itself.

For Miss Stokes, the funding will enable her to give back to her community, and focus more fully on her education.

“It is a privilege to receive this scholarship and will only encourage me to work harder to achieve my degree.”
