KIDS GET THE ANSWERS THEY’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR

- INSIDER WORDS: DARREN HALLESY

For the first time in several years the studios at Mt Cootha are back in action with a locally made children’s show in production for Nine.

BrainBuzz is a science-based children’s show designed to capitalise on young brains, thirsty for knowledge.

Screening weekday mornings on 9Go! it answers questions children have about the world they live in.

The presenters are Kellyn Morris and Clare Van Dorssen. Morris is a 10-year veteran of children’s TV, while Van Dorssen spent several years travelling the nation presenting science shows and running teacher development workshops. With qualifications in science and education, they believe between them they have the right mix of fun and education.

“The show is based on frequently asked questions, like why is the sky blue or where does rain come from?” Kellyn says. “We do give answers, and have fun along the way.

“One of my favourites is when we looked at roller coasters. Kids always want to know how it goes upside down and why do we get scared?”

Series one is already in the can, and series two is almost complete, making a total of 130 episodes filmed to date.

“My role is to not only write the science content but more importantly to help the kids go through experiments and demonstrations; it’s very hands on and interactive,” Clare says. “Kids know that when the word ‘experiment’ comes up in science class, they are going to do something and be involved.”

The show premiered last month and has already covered questions such as why is metal so strong?, why do we get dizzy when we spin around? and what is a laser?

“When people ask me the best thing I’ve done on the show so far it must be skydiving,” Clare says. “We’ve done everything on this show! As it’s television I’m more inclined to say yes to things.

“I’d swim with sharks in a heartbeat. I love how everything we do in our daily lives has science behind it.”

BrainBuzz screens Monday to Friday on 9GO! and streams live on 9NOW.
