GRIN AND BEAR IT

-

FIRST DATE

Despite being a relationship expert, Dr Nikki Goldstein isn’t immune to awkward first dates.

“My very first Tinder date I arrived and my date did not look how they did on their profile,” she recalls.

“He was quite a bit older than I was expecting and I had nerves just thinking, ‘OK, how am I going to get out of this?’

“Or I’ve had dates where I’ve had nerves because I really liked the person.

“You’re thinking don’t stuff it up, don’t say the wrong thing, because in your head you know you’re not being the real version of you.”

In the world of online dating and Instagram filters, Dr Nikki’s first scenario is all too common, but her advice is to grin and bear it.

“I’ve never been a fan of going to the bathroom and texting someone with emergency, I think that’s really bad,” she says.

“You’ve both made the effort to meet up so at least have a drink, just don’t make it a long date – don’t prolong it.”

Take note of what you’re wearing. Dress is a form of non-verbal communication, so make sure it’s sending the right message. Speaking of messages, put the phone away. Do try to do something creative with the date. Choosing the activity is a way to tell someone about you.

Don’t talk about marriage and children on a first date – it can scare somebody off. Same goes for that monologue about past relationships and sexual experiences.

Avoid talking about yourself too much too, especially if you’re nervous and motor-mouthing.
