BOXERS SET FOR RING FIREWORKS

- GLEN MCCULLOUGH glenm@thechronicle.com.au

BOXING: Don’t expect Kris George to turn up at Rumours International tonight weighed down with plans and strategies to help continue his climb up the world boxing ladder.

Two things will be on his mind.

Keep it simple and win. It almost sounds too laid-back.

But it’s that free-spirited approach which has taken the 28-year-old’s career record to 13 wins from 14 fights and numerous title victories including the current Commonwealth Championship.

George is promising his supporters more of the same tonight when he fights Argentinian Maximiliano Scalzone for the World United Championship belt.

Scalzone arrived in Toowoomba this week with equally impressive stats to those of George.

The 27-year-old, who does not speak English and as of Thursday was still waiting for his misplaced luggage to arrive, is not used to losing.

His 18 fights have produced 16 wins with 11 of those finishing inside the distance.

Every fight now for George is potentially make or break in his determined bid for a world title shot.

But if he’s feeling any pressure along the way, he’s not showing it.

“I can’t tell you a lot about him,” George said of his opponent at Thursday’s TGW & Smithy Bring The Big Fights 19 media launch at Potter’s Boutique Hotel.

“Every fight, I just take it as it comes.

“I’ve got the help of the home-town feeling.

“You feel a lot more relaxed and calm at home.

“I’ll work things out when I get in the ring.

“That’s the approach I take in to every fight.

“It takes away the factor of panicking or having to find out as much information as you can.

“Every fight I go into I plan on having as little as possible going on in my mind.”

TICKETS for TGW & Smithy Bring The Big Fights 19 are available at the door.

Doors open at noon.
