RUGBY LEAGUE: NRL fans and rugby league lovers, where are you?

History will be created in Toowoomba on Sunday week when the city hosts its first National Rugby League match.

Everything is in place as the Gold Coast Titans prepare to head up the Range where they will host St George Illawarra Dragons in their round-three premiership clash at the famous Arthur St stadium.

Only one ingredient is missing nine days out from the rugby league showpiece — Toowoomba and Darling Downs supporters.

In a puzzling early response to the game, more than half the 9000 admission tickets remain up for grabs.

Titans CEO Graham Annesley was in Toowoomba yesterday to stress the importance of the public not only supporting Sunday week’s match but helping to secure the future of NRL games in the city.

“For all rugby league fans, I can only implore you to come out and support the game,” Annesley said.

“Go online and get your tickets now. At this stage tickets have been a little less than what we would have expected.

“There are still about 5000 tickets available.

“We are not even halfway yet to filling the venue and it really is important to us in terms of the future of NRL games in this region that we can make this game a success.

“It really needs the whole community to get behind it and support it.

“If there are any hopes of coming back here again, people need to show us they want NRL competition games here in Toowoomba.

Toowoomba rugby league legend John McDonald also called on the region’s rugby league fraternity to turn up in numbers on Sunday week.

“I’m sure we’ll get behind it,” McDonald said.

“It’s a special event and we’ll see some great rugby league played here on the day.”
