A fitting tribute to fallen Digger

- LOUISE O’MARA louise.omara@thechronicle.com.au

SATURDAY was a special day in Highfields with the naming of a street to honour a hero.

There is simply no other word to describe Sean McCarthy who was killed in action in Afghanistan, serving his country at the age of 25.

Signaller McCarthy joined a massive list of Australian diggers who paid the highest price for their efforts in trying to bring peace to the world.

I remember when the story broke back in July, 2008 that an ex-member of 7th Signal Regiment at Cabarlah had been killed ruing a roadside bomb attack which also wounded two others.

There is always this horrible sadness when we lose an Australian soldier and I remember the many tributes at the time, from politicians to sportsmen. Even family of mine who had known Sean.

It is an understatement to say it was devastating to his family and friends but I hope they can find some peace in a simple, but effective street sign.

Signaller McCarthy deserves to be remembered, we should not forget his name, nor his sacrifice.

It is only fitting that this faithful, courageous man, loving son and friend finally has this recognition in the Sean McCarthy Way.

I hope children for years to come, will ask about Signaller McCarthy and come to realise what his sacrifice for his country meant to us all and still does.
