JUST WING IT

NAIL UPPER LID EYELINER WITH TIPS FROM BEAUTY GURU NATASHA BOWLING

- WORDS: SALLY COATES

Attempting upper lid eyeliner — or God forbid a wing — for the first time can be fairly traumatic. If there’s one thing in beauty that’s harder than it looks, this is it.

If you’ve been burned before, but can work up the courage to try again, we’ve enlisted the help of make-up expert Natasha Bowling for some hot tips.

The first tip is actually about a tip ... of a brush.

“If you want to use a brush to apply, use a super thin pointed brush — my all time favourite is #210 by MAC Cosmetics,” Natasha says.

“Don't press hard, because the harder you press the thicker the line.

“And don’t try and draw the line in one go. Use short, feathery strokes with a light hand.”

If you’re not confident with a brush, you can always use a pen, but Natasha tends to steer clear of the old-school pencils in favour of more modern versions.

“Eyeliner pens are really good for beginners and my personal favourite is a gel,” she says.

“You just have to make sure it doesn’t dry up as that can make it hard to use.

“Really wet eyeliners can be difficult if you’re learning, but once you nail it and have a steady hand, these are great. I also love these when using the tape method.”

The tape method is a little trick for the perfect winged eyeliner look — Natasha refers to it as “the ultimate cheat”.

“The cello tape method has exploded on Instagram and it really does work,” she says.

“Press the tape on your hand a few times so it’s not super sticky. You don't want to hurt the delicate skin around your eye area.

“Place the tape in line with the corner of your eye and the end of your eyebrow.

“From the centre of your lash line, draw a stripe towards the outer lash line.

“Now continue the line outwards towards the tape and stop where you would like your liner to end. Gently remove the tape and you have a perfect wing.

“If it has leaked you can always use a cotton tip or make-up remover wipe to gently tidy it up.”
