Stars vie for solo choir role
Big numbers for Pinocchio play
MORE than 100 young actors, dancers and singers put their best foot forward auditioning for the Toowoomba Choral Society Youth Choir’s major production for 2018.
In a testament to the talent held by the region’s young performers aged 10 to 18 years, more than 80 of the stage hopefuls tried out for solo roles in the family musical My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale.
Director Vicki Bravery said it was a credit to Toowoomba’s young stars who had the confidence to take on the solo roles, and each student who tried out would be in the production when it premiered at the Empire Theatre in July.
“I’m very excited about this show because it tells the wellknown Disney story of Pinocchio, but from Geppetto’s point of view,” Ms Bravery said.
“Sometimes we think we know a story, but when you look at it from another side we can learn so much more about the characters.
“Just like in real life, we can appreciate each other a little bit better if we stop to think about how the other person feels in a situation, rather than just looking at it from our own perspective.”
Auditions were held at Fairholme College Performing Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday.
Theatre hopefuls were taught some choreography on the day before auditioning before a panel of judges made up of producers, directors and former Toowoomba Choral Society Youth Choir members.
Call-backs were held yesterday and today.
My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale will perform the Empire Theatre on July 14.
