OUR SAY Special day for region’s NRL fans

- SPORTS EDITOR JASON GIBBS jason.gibbs@thechronicle.com.au

YESTERDAY was something truly special for the region’s NRL fans and those visiting Toowoomba for the historic clash.

We’ve been the birthplace of many a sporting legend and played host to some massive events but this was a first.

At first glance it’s just another rugby league match – NRL players throwing on their club jerseys at Clive Berghofer Stadium is nothing new to us.

But yesterday the atmosphere and the occasion was something completely different.

At the recent Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans trial game the supporters were passionate and the atmosphere energetic.

Yesterday there was a totally different vibe – it was electric.

Those packed into the extra seating and lining the sidelines of the stadium have probably attended their fair share of NRL games – but yesterday they knew they were part of something special.

The fans were more emotionally invested in the outcome of the game – captivated by every tackle, line break, flick pass and point scored.

I only hope the powers that be saw that emotion as well.

It would be great to see more NRL games here in the Garden City.

Maybe we as a community could forgo future trial matches in the knowledge we will host an NRL match.

Those trial games could then be taken to other areas of Queensland to help grow the game and reward more fans.
