Young volleyballer eager to set up future in the game he loves
VOLLEYBALL: Bevan Fry heads to Thailand next month hoping to set up a bright future for himself.
The 17-year-old volleyballer will be part of Australia’s Junior Men’s Development Program competing in a five-day tournament.
The young Australian squad will face a number of older, more experienced teams and Fry is expecting a challenge.
“It (volleyball) is a pretty big sport in Thailand,” he said.
“Where we are competing there is a massive sports arena and it’s usually full of people.
“We’ll be competing against under-21 teams as well which will be a real challenge for us.”
Fry featured in the same program last year and hopes another good performance will boost his standing in Australian volleyball circles.
“I just want to play to the best of my ability,” Fry said.
“Hopefully if I put in a good performance and communicate effectively I’ll stand out.
“I’d love to make a senior Australian team one day and that type of thing helps.”
There are many other options open to Fry should his dream to represent Australia at the top level not become a reality.
As well as the college volleyball scene in America, there are also sought-after positions on professional volleyball teams.
“There are a lot of professional teams in Europe,” Fry said.
“Making one of those is pretty hard but it’d be worth it.”
Attitude will not be a problem for the Harristown State High School student – who works two part-time jobs to fund his passion.
“It’s pretty expensive travelling to the clinics, trials and tournaments but it’s what you have to do to be noticed,” he said.
“I love it all, though.
“I first started playing volleyball at school because my mates played and it just went from there.
“I love playing with my mates, making new friends and just travelling around.”
Fry, who plays as a middle blocker, also coaches Little Athletics in his spare time.
