5 talking points from TRL round 2

RUGBY LEAGUE: The main focus of rugby league in Toowoomba centred on the Titans and the Dragons’ historical fixture. However our local stars still made it happen in the TRL.

Here are the five talking points to come out of the second round of the competition:

BAINBRIDGE PLAYS, GOOD THINGS HAPPEN

Highfields welcomed back their five-eighth Nick Bainbridge for their big encounter against Pittsworth and Kuhls Rd, and he made an immediate impact.

He had the Danes defence in two minds with his strong running game and ability to make decisions at the line.

That is a quality that will help the Eagles as they look to put a few consecutive wins together.

WATTLES HAVE MASTERED THE ART OF WINNING UGLY

Ask any coach and they will tell you that in rugby league, there is no such thing as a bad win.

Wattles have grinded out a pair of victories to start the season, keeping their unbeaten streak to start the year alive.

There are obviously areas in their game to improve, but getting the win during the hard slogs is the sign of a good side.

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL IS A COUP

I didn’t have the opportunity to head out to Glenholme Park on Friday night, but from all accounts it was a roaring success.

Kudos to both Brothers and Souths for getting onboard and giving it a go.

The timing was right with the Titans and Dragons match on Sunday, and it is something that should definitely stick around.

VALLEYS’ SCORING ABILITY IS SCARY

A 50-22 scoreline against Oakey marked the second successive week the Roosters were able to raise the bat.

What has been most impressive is their ability to pile on points in a hurry.

In the space of 15 and a half minutes, Valleys was able to take the score from 10-6 to 36-6 before half-time, ultimately taking the game away from their opponents.

WHAT PREMIERSHIP HANGOVER?

Teams are supposed to drop off after they claim a droughtbreaking title, merely plod along into the finals and go out without a whimper.

The Dalby Diehards have shown no signs of that happening, with a solid first-up outing against Pittsworth, and a convincing win over Warwick at the weekend.

They’ve had a few injury concerns to key players, but have been performing really well. Their match against Wattles in round five is shaping up as a cracker.
