Seafood a hit at Easter

Preparing for rush at weekend

IT WILL be seafood, seafood and more seafood as the city’s fishmongers prepare for the Easter feast rush.

Neptina Hunkin and husband Mal know all too well how much people love seafood at this time of year, as owners of Seafood on Mary and Central Seafood Market at Grand Central. They are even delivering seafood to towns out west, as far as Goondiwindi.

“Well Easter itself we will probably go through two to three tonne of fish, maybe oneand-a-half to two tonne of prawn,” Mrs Hunkin said of Central Seafood Market.

She expects Seafood on Mary will supply much more fish because it is set to open tomorrow on Good Friday and will be cooking fish all day long.

Easter is the second busiest time of year, behind Christmas, for people like the Hunkins and while it is hard to prepare, they are stocked up and ready to go.

“If you are looking at whole fish, the most popular is your reef fish, like your red emperors, sweet lip and things like that,” she said.

“In fillets there is a whole range, people do have their favourite fish through the year but then at Easter they do like to experiment a little bit more.

“But we have got some lovely fresh sea perch and flathead as well as the normal stock like salmon and barramundi.”

Mrs Hunkin said while many people decided to have seafood during Easter to follow tradition, by not eating meat on Good Friday, it was also a healthy option to have alongside the chocolate.

“It’s easy, quick, it’s healthy. This time of the year a lot of people get together as families and have so much food,” she said.

“When you are eating heavy food all the time it does get a bit much. Whereas seafood is nice and light and people can feel good about eating it I think.”

Central Seafood Market is open today, Saturday, and Monday. Seafood on Mary is open today and tomorrow.
