Socceroos’ core starts to emerge

- — Tom Smithies

Some players did themselves some good in Australia’s 0-0 draw with Colombia yesterday in London, and others did themselves even more good by not being there.

As Bert van Marwijk ponders the evidence of his first two fixtures as Australian boss, more hints emerged as to who will form his core at the World Cup.

The truth is the Socceroos escaped several times by the skin of their teeth, with Colombia hitting post and bar, missing two open goals and seeing a late penalty saved by Danny Vukovic.

Massimo Luongo was widely and justifiably praised, his quick feet easily the most creative part of the Australian performance.

In a system that suited him, the QPR midfielder confirmed van Marwijk’s positive vibe.

“(He was) very good, but I already knew that,” the coach said.

“The system we want to play, he was one of our best players (because) he understands it. He knows the spaces and he knows where to stand.

“He’s also strong, and you can see the chance he had he created himself through his quality. I was very satisfied with him.”

Luongo might not have played had Aaron Mooy been fit but it’s not Mooy who is most at risk from Luongo staking a claim.

Captain Mile Jedinak was solid as ever but his passing range remains the weakest link in van Marwijk’s hopes of a quick counter-attacking game. Mooy shows every week for Huddersfield that he relishes exactly that.

No doubt watching in Switzerland and Suwon, Trent Sainsbury and Mathew Jurman again excelled by not being involved as they recover from injury.

Mark Milligan and Milos Degenek strove manfully but assuming they are fit and firing by June, it’s very hard not to see Sainsbury and Jurman lining up against France.

As for who will be behind them, Mat Ryan’s combination of EPL form and Socceroos incumbency is a compelling case.

Brad Jones did nothing wrong but Vukovic was able to enjoy a moment of glory in saving a penalty, albeit one he himself conceded. Ryan, however, still looks the most assured option.
