Good Friday not so good for some Toowoomba offenders

- PETER HARDWICK peter.hardwick@thechronicle.com.au

GOOD Friday turned out to be not so good for seven men who found themselves in the custody of the Toowoomba watch house after being arrested on various charges.

At least two of those who appeared before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Saturday morning missed spending Easter with family after they were held in custody.

One 33-year-old father of seven was arrested on a warrant on Friday morning after failing to front the court as directed earlier this year.

Magistrate Kay Ryan found that he was subject to a parole order at the time and, after he pleaded guilty to the failing to appear in court charge, he was sentenced to three months in jail.

Despite Ms Ryan ordering he be eligible to apply for release on parole immediately, such application will take time and so he will remain in custody at least for up to one month while his application is processed.

A Warwick man who was taken into custody on Friday for breaching his bail conditions also spent the remainder of the Easter long weekend in custody after his application for bail was adjourned so a suitable bail address could be found.

The man was not required to enter any plea to a charge of using a carriage service to procure a child under 16 for sex.

His bail application was adjourned until tomorrow when court resumes and he was remanded in custody.

Most of the other “guests” of the watch house on the weekend were subject to domestic violence charges arising from Good Friday family activities.
