TENNIS: Olivia Gadecki will attempt to defend her Silver Cup women’s title today.

The 15-year-old number three seed booked her place in the final with a convincing 6-1 6-2 victory over Austrian Pia Konig.

Toowoomba Tennis Association president Allen Smythe commended Gadecki after her semi-final win.

“Olivia played some really good tennis against Pia,” he said.

“She controlled the game quite well and it was a great result for her.”

Gadecki will face tournament top seed Kaylah McPhee who beat Nakisa Djamshidi 6-2 6-2.

Smythe is predicting a final that will enthral tennis fans.

“These two are really going to mix things up,” he said.

“I think there’ll be a lot of baseline play but neither of them is afraid to break it up and change the play.

“They’ll really slog it out and work hard for the win.”

In the Gold Cup, the men will have to battle hard for their shot at glory.

“The men’s draw has featured some real battles,”

Smythe said.

“Patrick Harper and Yukimaro Li played for just over

three hours before Patrick won. Jayden Court was forced to work for his spot in the semifinals fighting back from 5-2 in the third set against Scott Puodziunas to win 6-3 2-6 7-6.

“The men have produced some fantastic tennis – a lot of tough matches and some really good three setters,” Smythe said.

“I think overall there has been some great quality during the whole tournament.

“And I’m not even going to attempt to predict who can win in either draw.

“Everyone is there because they deserve to be.”
