Big fields nominate for Weetwood and Cup

Weetwood winners head noms

RACING: Two previous winners, five entries from premier Clifford Park trainer Ben Currie and a Chris Waller stable representa­tive are amongst nomination­s for Saturday’s Audi Centre Weetwood Handicap (1200m).

The $150,000 Listed Weetwood heads Saturday’s premier Clifford Park meeting which launches the 2018 Queensland Winter Carnival.

Connection­s of several Weetwood hopefuls face an anxious wait on securing a race start with 22 entries received for the event which will be trimmed to a field of 14 when final acceptance­s are declared on Wednesday.

Last year’s Weetwood deadheat winner Jumbo Prince for trainer Michael Nolan and 2016 winner Choice Bro from the Tony Sears stable are assured of a start in their bid for a second race win.

Currie, who saddled last year’s co-race winner Col ‘N’ Lil, has five runners nominated as he bids for back-to-back wins in his home feature.

Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan’s three Weetwood entries includes last month’s Gold Coast Goldmarket winner Raido.

Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller’s Queensland satellite stable has Zumbelina entered.

Saturday’s $100,000 Toowoomba Cup (2000m) has attracted 20 entries including 2016 winner Honey Toast from the Currie stable.

Sixteen entries were received for the Toowoomba Guineas (1600m).

A total of 165 nomination­s were received for Saturday’s nine-race meeting starting at 12.17pm.

■ Weetwood race-week celebratio­ns continue this morning when several feature runners take part in public gallops at Clifford Park from 7am.

The morning includes a free breakfast for the public.

■ A public Weetwood and Toowoomba Cup barrier draw will be held at The Waltons Store in Toowoomba CBD from 11am tomorrow.
